An announcement about a men's skills day happening in London:
Dear All
We are pleased to announce a single-day skills workshop aimed at beginners and intermediate level
male ultimate players (although all levels are welcome).
It will be jointly planned and coached by Clapham Ultimate (National and European Champions) and
Fire of London (Tour Champions). We will have a number of stations with different skills to work
on and some tactics and gameplay too.
This should be an excellent opportunity to brush up on your skills and to pick up some tips from
some of the top players in the UK.
To register your interest please email and I will send you more information
nearer the time. This can be a team contact if appropriate.
Also, info will be put here:
On behalf of Clapham Ultimate and Fire of London, we look forward to seeing you there.

Sounds like a great opportunity for all players in the South East, especially the students who will be playing Outdoor Regionals the weekend after!

Ladies of Uni Ultimate,
I'm overjoyed to announce the Uni Southern Women's Indoor Qualifiers will be held in Brighton on 28/29th January.
Accomodation will be provided by the most hospitable Squaws & Mohawks of Sussex Uni, there'll be cheap food (50p sandwiches) & drink on sale throughout both days, and a party of Mohawk & Squaw proportions - all for the rarely seen non-ridiculous fee of £90 per team.
Make sure you write on the back of any non-union cheques:
Team name
Cheque guarantee number (card number)
Expiry date
Contact number
Make them payable to USSU and send them to:
Felix Shardlow
35 Edburton Avenue

I will accept 'holding' cheques because some universities aren't in term time - just attach a note asking me not to pay it in yet and I'll hold onto your space. Deadline for entries is 15th January!
Also email me with numbers/days for accomodation & to confirm your entry & contact details. I'll be sending out more info later, but you can always check the website at http://www.seultimate.org to satisfy your information desires for the meanwhile.
If your club doesn't have enough women for a full team then you should've already been contacted by me with a suggestion for who you could join up with. If you don't and I haven't, then get in touch (Mwnci See, Picnic, UWE)! I'm running a No Woman Left Behind policy for this years' regionals, so whoever you are, wherever you are, you'll be able to play. Unless you're not southern, natch.
To recap, that's £90 a team, and:

What: University Southern Women's Indoor Regionals (U-SWIR)
Where: Sussex University, Falmer, Brighton
When: 28th & 29th January

So, what are you waiting for, get those cheques in! And if you don't have a team to play for, get in touch and I'll find you one, so you too can be part of this wonderful tournament.

Feng Qian from LSE has written a report on the games held yesterday in London between LSE, UCL and Holloway Hammers.
Hi everyone,
thanks for the great games today! The games kicked off at 1435 with Holloway and UCL taking on each other in an exciting match. UCL threw a zone defence which surprised Holloway quite a bit with the mild wind conditions, but Holloway recovered sufficiently to score a few times in succession, taking the match 4-1....
Mohawks 1 & 2 also played Roehampton in Brighton, winning 11-4 and 6-3 respectively. These games in London and Brighton have shuffled the table around somewhat before the end of the term - Holloway have moved up to third (just above UCL) with less games played than anyone else in the top 8, Mohawks' lead extends as their games played reaches double figures, Mohawks 2 are scything up the table with persistance, nipping at Surrey's toes for 5th place now, and Roehampton put a gap between themselves and Strange Blue / Aye-Aye to assert themselves in the top 8.
Next fixture: 11th Jan, UCL vs LSE 2nd half.
Next event: Saturday 14th January, Brighton.

Online now is the Brunel Women's video of frisbee, fun and frolics, taken from various women's events over the 04-05 season. It's three and a half minutes long and contains some women's ultimate action, lots of random clips, some funny stuff, some bendy stuff and loads of photos, all to a catchy soundtrack. Gives us a taste of what to expect from the Brunel Flair Women's team this year at regionals. Gemma says:

A word from Meg about the upcoming Women's Skills Day in London on 4th December:
Hello,
Just a quick reminder that we do have a women's skills
practice this Sunday at 1:30 in Hyde Park. (South side
in between Hyde park Corner and the Albert Memorial,
you will have to look amongst the footballers for some
frisbees!)
All skill levels welcome. We will be focusing on
throwing technique (including faking), cutting, and
the strategy and execution of a successful dump and
swing.
We also encourage women from the same club/university
team to work together so that they can build on the
connections that will serve them in a game situation,
so groups are welcome!
Spread the word!

Dan Sidders has written a nice detailed report on the recent Surrey Scorpions Fresher Training Day:
On Saturday 19th November Surrey hosted a unique event, aimed specifically at university beginners the Fresher Training Day was meant to be fun and informative climaxing in a good night out...
It can be safely said that all of these objectives were met, from the awesome zone D that Mohawks beginners took back to Brighton and challenged their experienced players with to the Beer Festival which just happened to be organised by one of the Surrey committee to be on the same day! Freshers were expected from Brighton, Holloway, Roehampton, Reading and of course Surrey but when the fog lifted and the frost receded...
It's well worth a read as it was a fantastic event, I hope it happens again next year (providing the beer festival is held on the same weekend!) and carries on increasing in size, bringing in freshers from across the region to learn together.

Last weekend saw the Surrey Scorpions Freshers Fun day, which was attended by beginners from the universities of Surrey, Sussex, and Royal Holloway.
The day started as it meant to go on, as a frenzy of freshers bought up the Surrey Scorpions discs on sale so they could get Rich White to add a personalised signature to each one. Expect to see one on eBay very soon.
The rest of the day was a big success, with players moving between four 'skills stations' where they learnt about hucking, zone and stack amongst other things. The frisbee for the day finished with a mini hat tournament (where all the players were randomly dispersed between four teams), in which you could see people putting into action the skills they had learnt throughout the day in two exciting games each. The winners received a bag of goodies, and the MVP of the final was honored with a Surrey disc signed personally by Rich White.
The evening saw, for those hardcore enough, a beer festival organised by Special, a celebration of Rich White's birthday (where more discs were signed, including two to be given away as prizes), and a rather drunken post-festival venture into the union nightclub.
Thanks to Dan Sidders and Surrey for organising such an awesome event! Hopefully we'll see more like this in years to come, on bigger and bigger scales...

Hello All,
Just wanted to drop a quick email as I have scheduled
two more women's skills/beginners practices to take
place in Hyde Park before Christmas. We had an
excellent practice despite high winds on Oct 30th and
want to continue to provide structure and coaching for
women who want to develop their game.
We ended up splitting into groups so that more
experienced players could focus on specific skills and
the beginners could learn about the basics. So really
anyone in the beginner/intermediate range can gain
from these sessions. In the new year we plan to offer
these sessions on a fortnightly basis.
Please pass these dates along to any of your ladies
who might be interested. They can send me their email
addresses and be added to the group list that gets
regular updates.

After the games, the teams headed to Falmer bar where the three pint challenge relay race commenced. Mac & Nick from the Mohawks were passing their straws to Sarah Archer (Vomit Girl) and Louise Davey (Baloo/Dave) from Surrey, and Bob & Greg from Mohawks were passing to George & John from Imperial. After an impressive 17.7s by Mac & Nick gave them a few seconds head start, Sarah and Louise were fighting against George & John for victory. It was neck and neck the whole way, and when it came to the last few seconds Imperial just pipped the Surrey girls to the post, each of them finishing in ~40sec. Excellent that so many beginners teams made it to Hyde Park for this - it's especially awesome that the region's newest team, Roehampton, came as high as second!
Congratulations go to Brunel for winning this tournament for the second year running, and a big hand to Sam Hird for making it happen - I'm sure all the newbies must've had a great time, maybe a few are even hooked...
22.09.2005
Hmm, I've been thinking - at the moment this front page is where I make notes of which sections have been updated after I've updated them, and where the new news is at... but it might be better if I have some kind of a system which collates all the recent updates from the various pages and displays them all neatly onto one page a couple of times a week. Well, here's a start anyway:
From :
I've picked up on a rumour that the Iceni girls are up for visiting universities near London for freshers fairs to help at the ultimate frisbee stands... See what Maria Cahill says:
"We're particularly interested in helping recruit and retain women players. Not sure what help we can be exactly, but hoping to be able to rustle up a few volunteers to help man stands, throw discs around, show videos, talk people thru the game and hand out fliers or whatever else you'd like us to do.
I realise this is late notice, but if you would like Iceni help.... let us know dates time etc and we'll try to be around"
These girls can do a lot for recruiting both ladies and gentlemen into your club - how can you refuse an offer from the Iceni girls of doing anything you'd like them to do? Get so your women's team can be sure of competing in women's indoor qualifiers and outdoor nationals!
From :
I've got news from that he'll be running a free outdoor beginners one-day tournament at the start of term:
Hello,
Kings and Imperial are going to be holding the former UCL Beginners tournament in Hyde Park this year on Saturday 8th October. So, the usual plan, turn up at 10, captains meeting 10:15, games start at 10:30, 5-2 beginner experienced split, experienced cant score etc. etc. Lets hope for some slightly better weather.
if youre interested, as soon as possible please, with contact details, (inc. mobile number) how many teams youre bringing...
Last year's event was absolutely awesome by all accounts. Brunel entered two teams who came first & second, prophetic of their domination of the region last season. No doubt entering an outdoor tournament and getting their beginners playing so soon helped them immensely.
There's also been word on the grapevine of an indoors happening on 22nd&23rd October - check out the link for more info from Alex (Aye-Aye TD).
21.09.2005
Hey, a few pages have been updated: an announcement from Gemma Taylor about the university women's season ahead has been posted to the page, and a brief update about the university indoor regionals is on the page.
07.09.2005
The site has been updated in many ways - the latest big addition being a which will fill out in time. I've added a 'Prizes' section to the South East Uni Ladder League section, where teams can donate prizes which'll be given to the top finishers and spirit winners of the league at the end of the season, and a few more teams have been added / updated in the University and Womens sections.
Discuits are coming to Brighton on the 8th October for some games and some drinks. Hopefully Discuits will be able to bring enough players for a number of showcase games - Brighton Ultimate 2 vs Discuits 2, BU Women vs Discuits Women, Reading Dragons vs Mohawks, and then a finale of Brighton Ultimate 1 vs Discuits 1 - which turned out in Discuits' favour at Nationals last weekend. Maybe even a BU Juniors vs Mohawks 2 game could happen...
02.09.2005
Hello. Do excuse me, I've just redesigned the website... I suppose this is where I should give you the general gist of the site, what you can expect to find here, why you'd want to ever come back. And why on earth am I writing in this horrible light green?
That's better. Or is it? Yes, it'll do for now.
Anyway, so hopefully you will have glanced at the links on the left - they all have content in, except the bracketed entries, which I've not got around to yet. I particularly recommend the Women's pages, and the SE Uni Ladder Leader, which has just started its second season. Of course the Videos page right up at the top there took ages, pasting together clips and applying soundtrack, so you might find that interesting.
I'm in an awful rush at the minute, so will have to leave it at that for the time being. Enjoy!
Felix
