Surrey Scorpions Fresher Training Day
On Saturday 19th November Surrey hosted a unique event, aimed specifically at university beginners the Fresher Training Day was meant to be fun and informative climaxing in a good night out...
It can be safely said that all of these objectives were met, from the awesome zone D that Mohawks beginners took back to Brighton and challenged their experienced players with to the Beer Festival which just happened to be organised by one of the Surrey committee to be on the same day! Freshers were expected from Brighton, Holloway, Roehampton, Reading and of course Surrey but when the fog lifted and the frost receded there were two teams missing; Reading forgot and Roehampton… well we’re still not quite sure. Over forty freshers were there with coaches from the Lucky Huckers (Guildford Open Geo Team) putting them through their paces with four stations. Two were designed to take them back to basics working on stack offence and basic throwing and catching, the other two were designed to get the freshers to push themselves a bit further working on zone D and hucking - with Lucky Huckers coaching it had to happen.
The freshers were bunged into random groups with the aim to encourage inter club love and then the same groups formed the teams for the afternoons play. With four teams and two (beautiful) pitches the scene was set for an afternoon of tiring games. Team names were created and such unforgettable concepts as 'Monkey’s Forehead' (a pub near Holloway uni) and Surry-al Genocide (the original Scorpions name which was disallowed by the uni) were created. Four games were played and then it was time to flee from the encroaching darkness in favour of a shower and the pub!
Hitting the Union at about 7:00 we bought some tokens and headed to the bar where the enormous variety of beverages on sale scared some, you could have beer, beer or beer! All in all there were eighteen three pint challenge attempts and some brilliant calling in honour of Rich White which actually brought the pub quiz to a halt...
The two huge tables of ultimate players were saddened to hear that the bar closed at eleven but soon got over it when it was announced that we could get drinks for a pound a pint! Even better news was that we could head downstairs for the No Wave music society beerathon and mad moshing session. Some pretty scary people soon made space for us on the dance floor and before you knew it there was a cross club circle of love and crazy dancing. Apparently everyone made it home or at least to Pete Berryman’s (think there were over twenty staying at his house) for a bit of rest.
Sunday saw Mohawks attend the Surrey indoor training session and continue the growth of commonality in the South East. This year the spirit within the region has been awesome and it couldn’t have been more visible at the weekend. Thanks to everyone who came down for getting so absolutely plastered at the beer festival and of course to Rich White who was the inspiration behind many chants and the subject of far too many random Mohawk dares and bets.

Surrey Scorpions #14 & Club Chairman

Last weekend saw the Surrey Scorpions Freshers Fun day, which was attended by beginners from the universities of Surrey, Sussex, and Royal Holloway.
The day started as it meant to go on, as a frenzy of freshers bought up the Surrey Scorpions discs on sale so they could get Rich White to add a personalised signature to each one. Expect to see one on eBay very soon.
The rest of the day was a big success, with players moving between four 'skills stations' where they learnt about hucking, zone and stack amongst other things. The frisbee for the day finished with a mini hat tournament (where all the players were randomly dispersed between four teams), in which you could see people putting into action the skills they had learnt throughout the day in two exciting games each. The winners received a bag of goodies, and the MVP of the final was honored with a Surrey disc signed personally by Rich White.
The evening saw, for those hardcore enough, a beer festival organised by Special, a celebration of Rich White's birthday (where more discs were signed, including two to be given away as prizes), and a rather drunken post-festival venture into the union nightclub.
Thanks to Dan Sidders and Surrey for organising such an awesome event! Hopefully we'll see more like this in years to come, on bigger and bigger scales...

Excellent that so many beginners teams made it to Hyde Park for this - it's especially awesome that the region's newest team, Roehampton, came as high as second!
Congratulations go to Brunel for winning this tournament for the second year running, and a big hand to Sam Hird for making it happen - I'm sure all the newbies must've had a great time, maybe a few are even hooked...

I've got news from Sam Hird that he'll be running a free outdoor beginners one-day tournament at the start of term:
Hello,
Kings and Imperial are going to be holding the former UCL Beginners tournament in Hyde Park this year on Saturday 8th October. So, the usual plan, turn up at 10, captains meeting 10:15, games start at 10:30, 5-2 beginner experienced split, experienced cant score etc. etc. Lets hope for some slightly better weather.
Email me if youre interested, as soon as possible please, with contact details, (inc. mobile number) how many teams youre bringing...
Sam
Last year's event was absolutely awesome by all accounts. Brunel entered two teams who came first & second, prophetic of their domination of the region last season. No doubt entering an outdoor tournament and getting their beginners playing so soon helped them immensely.
There's also been word on the grapevine of an indoors inaugural Aye-Aye beginners tournament happening on 22nd&23rd October - check out the link for more info from Alex (Aye-Aye TD).

Yo, a news update:
Calendar:
The university calendar 2005/2006 is available for download on the UKU site: xls or pdf. If you want one with just uni dates and bid/eoi deadlines then check out this xls (or pdf. I strongly recommend you download the xls and print out a few copies on a colour printer, hand them out to your committee members for them to stick on their walls, it'll really help staying on top of things for your club this year.
Indoor Regionals:
No bids yet, but the Mohawks are going to make enquiries about hosting it again.
Other tournaments:
We've also got to host Outdoor Regionals in March, there's been a bit of chatter from Holloway Hammers about hosting it again so we'll see how that works out. It's possible Brighton might put in a bid too, I'm looking into a pretty sweet venue down here.
We (or the South West) will also have to host: Indoor Women's Qualifiers (Jan), Indoor Nationals division 2 (Nov/Dec), and Outdoor Nationals (End April). Get thinking about what you can do... EOI deadline for div2 indoors has already passed, I need bids by 1st October!
Ladder League:
I know term hasn't started yet and nobody's around, but you can still make preliminary arrangements to play Ladder League games. Mohawks for example are planning to play SEULL games on the 3rd, 5th, 7th and 9th Wednesdays of term - hopefully two games a time, with 1st & 2nd teams crossing over. So, if any date sounds good for your first competitive outdoor match of the season, just send out a feeler email (using the contacts on the teams list) to Mohawks or Surrey, who're both up for it, and the chances are nothing dramatic will come up which'll mean you'll have to cancel. Planning is the key to victory! And with such a fine prize fund taking form, you'll want to be in the running for it.
